June 23–25, 2010: Berkeley, California
This seminar builds on the Center for Ecoliteracy's acclaimed book Smart by Nature: Schooling for Sustainability. It is designed to give participants ideas, resources, and inspiration that they can take home to make teaching more engaging, effective, and memorable. Sustainability Education: Connecting Art, Science, and Design
August 16–18, 2010: Berkeley, California
Art and science are powerful, complementary means of communicating an understanding of nature. Many of today's most cutting-edge innovations in design (from gecko-inspired adhesives to energy-efficient buildings modeled after termite mounds) have been derived from nature, giving rise to a new field called biomimicry. Fritjof joins educators and artists from the Center for Ecoliteracy, California Academy of Sciences, de Young Museum, Biomimicry Institute, and River of Words to ask: How can we help students understand the intersections of art, science, and design? To combine art and science in order to better express humans’ relationship with nature? To design more sustainable societies through an understanding of nature?
